MVLA Speech & Debate

MVLA Speech and Debate has been proudly serving the high school district for over 30 years by teaching public speaking and argumentation, fostering leadership skills, and building lifelong friendships. Our camp emphasizes passing on that knowledge to ensure elementary and middle school students feel confident in public speaking situations. 

Our Public Speaking and Argumentation track focuses on increasing student comfort with public speaking through games and activities.

Our Competitive Speech and Debate track focuses on helping pre-competitive students and current competitors in elementary and middle school forensics  prepare for the fall competition season.

Our Staff

Our student instructors are varsity competitors with tournament experience and training in teaching skills. Lab leaders have previous summer camp or academic year teaching experience. Camps are overseen by graduating seniors with a track record of excellence in competition, leadership, and instruction, as well as the MVLA Director of Forensics, Julie Herman, an NSDA Diamond-level coach with over 10 years of instructional and administrative experience in speech and debate. Adult staffers at the camp have dynamic background checks on file with the MVLA High School District through the California DOJ.

Information about camp usually is released two-three days prior, as our school sites are usually just being cleared for summer uses. Information will include lists of what students ought to bring specifically by class level, but it's safe to assume that writing implements and a notebook will be helpful. -
